Some models from books/tutorials, and some created by myself. All were rendered on my Graphics Workstation with the following specs. – i7 2600k @3.42Ghz 4 Cores/8 Threads, 16Gb ram, 800W Gold Pro power supply, Western digital black caviar 1Tb as drive c:, 2 x Nvidia 560Ti, 1 x Nvidia Quadro 600 graphics card. OS – dual boots to Windows 7 Pro. 64bit with no cpu draining aero functionality turned on as well as Ubuntu 11.10 Linux.
It is not uncommon for one final render of a complex scene at a target resolution of say 3000 x 4000 pixels to take hours or even days to be completed. For fluid simulations or CGI with large caustics+HDR images the time required per frame increases termendously. Frames are usually combined with programs such as Quicktime Pro, Adobe Effects etc. into video files as seen in the video gallery section of this website.
