Reportviewer control

Here is a code snippet l got working which enables you to render using Visual Basic .Net an SSRS (Sql Server Report Services) Report to Adobe Acrobat PDF format or Microsoft Excel XLS file.

Public Sub RenderReportTOExcel(ByVal inReportFileName As String, ByVal inReportName As String)   ‘7/14/2008 SM

        ‘converts SSRS report to microsoft excel/acrobat pdf file

        Dim objReportViewer As New FrmWithReportViewer
                ‘Dim strFormat As String = “PDF”
        Dim strFormat As String = “Excel”
        Dim strDeviceInfo As String = String.Empty
        Dim myURLAccessParams As System.Collections.Specialized.NameValueCollection = Nothing
        Dim reportStream As System.IO.Stream = Nothing
        Dim strMimeType As String = String.Empty
        Dim strFileNameExtension As String = String.Empty

        Dim file_name As String = “d:test001.xls”

        objReportViewer.Text = inReportName

        OFD.FileName = “exportfile.xls”
        OFD.ShowDialog()
        file_name = OFD.FileName

        Dim raw As System.IO.FileStream = New System.IO.FileStream(file_name, IO.FileMode.Create)
        Dim buffer(1024) As Byte
        Dim read As Integer = -1
        Dim intCount As Integer = 1

        With objReportViewer.ReportViewer
            .ProcessingMode = Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ProcessingMode.Remote
            .ServerReport.ReportServerUrl = New Uri(My.Settings.ReportServerURL)
            .ServerReport.ReportPath = My.Settings.ReportPath + inReportFileName
            reportStream = .ServerReport.Render(strFormat, strDeviceInfo, myURLAccessParams, strMimeType, strFileNameExtension)

            lblMessage.Text = “Working…”
            read = reportStream.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)

            While (read > 0)
                raw.Write(buffer, 0, read)
                read = reportStream.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)
                intCount += 1
            End While

            lblMessage.Text = “Completed.”

            raw.Flush()
            raw.Close()
            raw.Dispose()
        End With

        raw = Nothing
        reportStream = Nothing

    End Sub

Windows Vista Ultimate

I use Kaspersky internet security version 7.0.0.125, recently my vista/internet explorer kept crashing/giving  this error message – “a runtime error has occured. Do you wish to debug? Line 1: invalid character” and windows offered to check for a solution. This feature is very useful and does work. You can also get at it by going to the control panel, then selecting the problem reports and solutions link. It maintains a list of unresolved problems and suggested solutions. In my case, it said:

Run the Kaspersky Anti-Virus tool to fix this problem

This problem was caused by Kaspersky Anti-Virus, which was created by Kaspersky Lab.

Solution

To solve this problem, you will need to run the automatic update tool that comes with Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Go online to learn how to use the tool:

Kaspersky Lab

It also had links to the Kaspersky website update tools section. This problem seems to be resolved with after downloading and installing their update kav8.0.0.357en.exe

Related to this, l also went ahead and installed as suggested by Vista:

This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between this version of Windows and this version of Visual Studio 2005. This program was created by Microsoft.

Solution

To solve this problem, go online and install the following updates:

  1. Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1
  2. Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista

Windows Tech Notes

Virtual PC 2007

Using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, selecting other allows you to install Windows 2008 Server as l have successfully done on a Microsoft Vista Ultimate workstation and a Windows XP workstation. To add the essential Virtual Machine Additons under the action menu, make sure you are logged into the Virtual Operating System. After this, you can now go to the Edit menu/Settings and add say Shared Folders.

Installing SQL Server 2008

On server configuration, when you get this error message ” Must provide AGTSVCACCOUNT parameter” – heres what worked for me. Set sql server agent, sql server (MSSQL), sql server analysis, SSRS, SSIS with blank passwords, but NT_AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE as username. For SQL Server Browser – it defaults to NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SERVICE.

Windows Server 2008

Heres the error l get trying to log into my Windows 2008 server remotely.

” To log on to this remote computer, you must be granted the allow log on through terminal services right. By default, members of the remote desktop users group have this right. If you are not a member of the remote desktop users group or another group that has this right, or if the remote desktop user group does not have this right, you must be granted this right manually”

To get Remote Desktop to work, add the user as a menber of the Remote Desktop users group AND also, go to the local security policy, Local policies branch, right click on Allow log on through terminal services properties,  and add the Remote Desktop Users group.  You do not need to install Terminal Services Server to get this to work.
